From Coax to Fiber: The Industry’s Natural Evolution

While hybrid fiber-coax (HFC) networks have been the standard for years, operators are now transitioning from analog to digital systems, pushing fiber deeper into their infrastructure. In many cases, that fiber reaches all the way to the end user—what’s known as fiber to the premises (FTTP), typically delivered through passive optical networks (PON).

This transformation allows:

  1. More scalable bandwidth

  2. Enhanced network reliability

  3. Support for future-proof applications

  4. Improved customer experiences

Slide from SCTE TechExpo 2024 showing CPON network topology.

Fiber's increasing importance was on full display at SCTE TechExpo 2024, where sessions covered FTTP deployment, PON operations, and an exciting innovation on the horizon: Coherent PON (CPON).

What Is CPON—and Why Does It Matter?

Coherent PON (CPON) is a breakthrough fiber optic architecture introduced by CableLabs in 2023. Unlike traditional PON systems, CPON uses coherent detection—a technology that increases network capacity and reach by boosting spectral efficiency.

Key features include:

  1. Up to 100 Gbps on a single wavelength

  2. Support for up to 512 users per split

  3. Reach up to 80 kilometers, ideal for rural or expansive deployments

  4. Compatibility with existing DWDM fiber systems

  5. Use cases across residential broadband, enterprise access, DOCSIS 4.0 aggregation, and xHaul for mobile networks

In short, CPON is designed to bring data-center-grade performance to the access network—cost-effectively and at scale.

Inside the Vision: How CPON Will Reshape Network Design

At TechExpo 2024, industry experts unveiled what a real CPON deployment might look like, based on a technical paper titled “What Could You Do With 100 Gbps Coherent PON?”. This vision includes:

  1. Tunable wavelengths in the C-band

  2. Compatibility with DWDM fiber backbones

  3. Network-wide upgrades without a full rip-and-replace

  4. Smarter aggregation points for Remote PHY and mobile xHaul equipment

  5. Cost-effective expansion for both cable and non-cable operators

Panel of engineers discussing fiber deployment at SCTE TechExpo 2024.

Other sessions explored practical concerns like reducing ONU costs, managing burst transmissions, and maintaining system resilience—all essential for scaling CPON beyond theory and into reality.

Looking Ahead: From Specification to Deployment

The CableLabs CPON Working Group continues to refine specifications, incorporating proposals from manufacturers, operators, and engineers across the ecosystem. While the final blueprint is still in progress, one thing is clear: fiber—and CPON in particular—is the future of cable infrastructure.

Explore the future of telecommunications in 2024 and beyond. Learn about 5G, fiber optics, IoT trends, and how these technologies are transforming connectivity in El Paso and beyond.

Introduction

The telecommunications industry is evolving at an unprecedented pace, driven by advancements in technology and the growing demand for faster, more reliable connectivity. As we look ahead to 2024 and beyond, three key trends—5G, fiber optics, and the Internet of Things (IoT)—are set to redefine how we communicate, work, and live. In this post, we’ll explore these trends and what they mean for businesses and residents in El Paso and beyond.

1. 5G: The Backbone of Next-Gen Connectivity

5G technology is no longer a distant dream—it’s here, and it’s transforming telecommunications. In 2024, 5G will:

  • Boost Speeds: Deliver download speeds up to 100 times faster than 4G.

  • Reduce Latency: Enable real-time communication for applications like remote surgery and autonomous vehicles.

  • Expand Coverage: Bring high-speed internet to rural and underserved areas, including parts of El Paso.

For businesses, 5G means faster data transfer, improved customer experiences, and new opportunities for innovation. At ACG, we’re working to bring the benefits of 5G to El Paso through cutting-edge infrastructure projects.

2. Fiber Optics: The Future of High-Speed Internet

Fiber optic technology is revolutionizing how data is transmitted, offering:

  • Unmatched Speeds: Fiber optics can transmit data at the speed of light, making it the fastest option available.

  • Greater Reliability: Unlike traditional copper cables, fiber is resistant to interference and weather conditions.

  • Scalability: Fiber networks can easily handle increasing data demands, making them future-proof.

In 2024, fiber optics will play a crucial role in supporting 5G networks and enabling smart city initiatives. ACG is proud to be at the forefront of fiber optic deployment in El Paso, ensuring our community stays connected.

3. Internet of Things (IoT): A Connected World

The IoT is creating a network of interconnected devices that communicate and share data. In 2024, IoT trends will include:

  • Smart Homes: Devices like thermostats, security systems, and appliances will work together seamlessly.

  • Smart Cities: IoT will power traffic management, energy efficiency, and public safety systems in cities like El Paso.

  • Industrial IoT (IIoT): Factories and warehouses will use IoT to optimize operations and reduce downtime.

For businesses, IoT offers opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance customer experiences. ACG is helping El Paso businesses integrate IoT solutions into their operations.

4. Enhanced Security and Privacy Measures

As telecommunications networks grow, so do concerns about security and privacy. In 2024, expect to see:

  • Advanced Encryption: Protecting data as it travels across networks.

  • AI-Powered Threat Detection: Identifying and neutralizing cyber threats in real time.

  • Regulatory Changes: New laws to safeguard user data and privacy.

ACG is committed to providing secure telecommunications solutions, ensuring our clients’ data is always protected.

5. The Role of Telecommunications in Smart Cities

Telecommunications is the backbone of smart city development. In 2024, cities like El Paso will leverage telecom technologies to:

  • Improve Infrastructure: Smart grids, connected transportation, and efficient waste management.

  • Enhance Public Services: Real-time monitoring of utilities and emergency response systems.

  • Boost Economic Growth: Attracting businesses and talent with cutting-edge connectivity.

ACG is proud to contribute to El Paso’s smart city initiatives, building the infrastructure needed for a connected future.

Conclusion

The future of telecommunications is bright, with 5G, fiber optics, and IoT leading the way.
